YOUR APPOINTMENT

You have been invited for a free NHS abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening scan.

This is a quick, simple and painless ultrasound scan that checks if there is a swelling in your aorta (the main blood vessel in your abdomen). Most scans take less than 10 minutes.

Appointments are held at local clinics across the Central England area, including:

  • GP surgeries

  • Primary Care Centres

  • Hospital Outpatient Departments

 

Please check your appointment letter for your exact location, date and time

ARRIVE AT CLINIC

  • Please arrive a few minutes before your appointment time

  • Screening is usually carried out at local GP surgeries, health centres or hospitals

  • The scan itself takes around 10 minutes

  • Please allow 15–20 minutes in total for your visit

THE SCAN 

  • You will be asked to lie down on an examination couch

  • A small amount of gel is placed on your abdomen

  • A handheld scanner is moved gently over your stomach

 

The scan:

  • ✅ Does not hurt

  • ✅ Does not involve needles

  • ✅ Takes around 10 minutes

YOUR RESULT

You will usually receive your result immediately:

  • Normal result – no further action needed

  • Small or medium aneurysm – you will be invited for regular monitoring

  • Large aneurysm – you will be referred to a specialist team for further care

How to Prepare for your Appointment

  • You can eat and drink as normal

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

  • You may be asked to lift or loosen clothing around your abdomen for the scan
